Pop-Up vs. Tension Fabric vs. SEG: Choosing a Backwall
October 13, 2026
Almost every portable backwall today is printed fabric on a lightweight frame. They differ in how the frame works and how the graphic attaches. That changes how fast it sets up, how it looks and how easily you can change the graphic later. Here are the three main types, side by side.

Fabric pop-up
A pop-up frame is one collapsible piece. You pull it open like an accordion and lock the arms. The fabric graphic attaches with hook-and-loop, and on many models it stays on the frame when you fold it up. The next setup is just: open, lock, done.
- Best for: first shows, people setting up alone, and frequent travel.
- Setup: a few minutes, with no tools and few loose parts.
- Examples: the RPL Straight Fabric Pop-Up, 10 ft with graphic: $540.00. The Hopup, 10 ft with front graphic: $1,011.11. On Hopup sizes 12 ft and under, the graphic stays attached.
Tension fabric (pillowcase)
A tension fabric display is a frame of aluminum tubes that slide together and lock with push-button snaps. The graphic is sewn like a pillowcase: it pulls over the frame and zips closed, stretching tight.
- Best for: curves, S-shapes, towers and arches, and walls that look finished from the back too.
- Setup: snap the frame together, pull on the graphic and zip it. The EZ Tube takes about 5 minutes, with no tools.
- Examples: the EZ Tube Straight Fabric Display, 10 ft with a single-sided graphic: $867.69 (the frame weighs 34 lbs). Its double-sided version is $1,129.23.
SEG (silicone edge graphic)
An SEG frame is made of aluminum extrusions with a narrow groove around the face. The fabric graphic has a thin silicone strip sewn around its edge. You press the strip into the groove, and the frame pulls the fabric flat and tight with no visible clips or border. Swapping a graphic takes minutes, and most backlit displays use SEG graphics too.
- Best for: the most polished, picture-frame look; changing graphics often; and adding light later.
- Setup: assemble the frame, then push in the graphic's edge all the way around.
- Examples: the Vector Fast Frame 10' Backwall Kit: three slim SEG frames under one printed graphic, packed in a carry bag, $1,519.29. The Aspen SEG Fabric Backwall, 10' x 7.5' single-sided: $1,730.77.

Which one should you choose?
- On a budget, or doing your first show: a fabric pop-up. It's the least expensive and the fastest to set up.
- Want curves or a shape that stands out: tension fabric.
- Want the cleanest look, or plan to change graphics each season: an SEG frame. Replacement graphics are simple to swap.
- Want it lit: see backlit SEG displays, explained.
Whichever you choose, check the height. In an in-line booth, most shows allow up to 8 ft at the back of the booth. The full-height 10 ft walls above are 7.5 to 8 ft tall. For everything else a 10x10 needs, see the 10x10 booth checklist.
